NHS Wales
The brief
NHS Wales needed an on-screen resource to support workforce planning within critical care. The guide would bring together information on the many different roles that can form part of a critical care multidisciplinary team, explaining what each role contributes, how people are trained and how long that training takes.
With a large amount of fairly detailed information to accommodate, the challenge was to make the document feel clear and manageable rather than dense or daunting. It needed to be easy for users to move around, find the information relevant to them and understand how the different roles fitted together.
The finished piece would live on the NHS Wales website as an interactive PDF, with navigation built into the document and live links throughout to further information and external resources. Visually, it needed enough character to make a potentially dry subject more engaging, without adding unnecessary decoration or getting in the way of the content.
Our approach
The design needed to make a large amount of detailed information feel approachable and easy to explore. We used the established NHS Wales colour palette throughout, creating clear sections and visual signposts without allowing the design to compete with the content.
Photography was introduced regularly to break up longer passages of text and give the document a more human feel, while careful use of space, colour and typography helped establish a clear hierarchy across the different roles and sections.
As the guide was designed specifically for on-screen use, navigation was considered from the outset rather than added afterwards. Interactive links allow users to move quickly between relevant sections, while live hyperlinks throughout the document take them directly to supporting information and external resources.
The result is a substantial resource that remains straightforward to navigate, visually engaging and, most importantly, practical to use.
